Steel Channel Sizes, Types & Uses: A Buyer's Guide

Steel channel is one of those shapes that shows up everywhere — trailer frames, building supports, equipment mounts, brackets, and structural framing — but it doesn't get the same attention as I-beams or tube steel. If you're specifying channel for a project and want to make sure you're ordering the right size, type, and grade, this guide covers what you need to know.

What Is Steel Channel?

Steel channel is a C-shaped structural section with a flat web and two flanges extending from the same side. Think of it as a beam with a flat back — that flat surface makes it easy to bolt to walls, columns, or other structural members.

Channel comes in two main profiles:

Standard Channel (C-Channel) has tapered flanges that are slightly thicker at the web junction and thinner at the tips. These follow the AISC C-designation — for example, C6 × 8.2 means a 6" deep channel weighing 8.2 pounds per foot.

Miscellaneous Channel (MC) has dimensions that fall outside the standard C-channel range. MC channels are often wider or have non-standard flange widths compared to their depth.

Bar Channel is the smaller sibling — lightweight channel typically ranging from 3/4" to 2" wide. Bar channel is commonly used for trim, light framing, brackets, and decorative metalwork where structural loads are minimal.

Common Steel Channel Sizes

Channel depth typically ranges from 3" to 18" for structural work, with bar channel covering the smaller sizes below 3".

Bar Channel (light-duty): 3/4" to 2" wide, 0.56 to 2.32 lbs/ft. Used for brackets, trim, light frames, and equipment mounts.

Small Structural (3" to 6"): 3.5 to 18 lbs/ft. The workhorse range for trailer frames, equipment supports, building framing, and general fabrication.

Medium Structural (7" to 10"): 6.5 to 13.4 lbs/ft. Used for heavier structural applications, mezzanine framing, and platform supports.

Large Structural (12" to 18"): 10.6 to 42.7 lbs/ft. Used for heavy structural framing, crane runway supports, bridge components, and industrial structures.

Steel Channel Grades

The grade determines the steel's strength and weldability. For channel, you'll most commonly see:

A36 — The standard structural steel grade. 36,000 PSI minimum yield strength. Excellent weldability. This is what most general fabrication and construction projects use, and it's the most widely available.

A572 Grade 50 — Higher strength at 50,000 PSI minimum yield. Used when you need more load capacity without stepping up to a larger section size. Common in structural applications where engineers spec higher strength to save weight.

A588 — Weathering steel (also known as Corten). Develops a rust-like patina that actually protects against further corrosion. Used for exposed outdoor structures, bridges, and architectural applications where you want the weathered look without painting.

Stainless Steel and Aluminum Channel

Not every application calls for carbon steel. Ram Steelco also carries channel in:

Stainless Steel Channel — For food processing, chemical environments, marine applications, or anywhere corrosion resistance is critical. Available in 304 and 316 grades.

Aluminum Channel — Lighter weight (roughly one-third the weight of steel) with natural corrosion resistance. Used for architectural trim, lightweight frames, and applications where weight matters.

Common Uses for Steel Channel

Channel's C-shape makes it uniquely useful for applications where you need a structural member with a flat mounting surface:

Trailer and equipment frames — Channel is a go-to for utility trailer frames, equipment skids, and machinery bases. The flat back bolts directly to cross members or deck plates.

Building framing and structural support — Used as purlins, girts, lintels over doorways and windows, and secondary structural members in steel buildings.

Brackets and supports — The C-shape naturally forms a shelf or ledge. Weld or bolt channel to a column and you've got an instant equipment mount, pipe support, or shelf bracket.

Stair stringers — Channel makes excellent stair stringers because the flanges provide a natural ledge for treads to sit on.

Base plates and frames — Back-to-back channel creates a section similar to an I-beam, useful for columns, frames, and supports where you need a symmetrical section.

How to Choose the Right Channel Size

Choosing channel comes down to three questions:

1. What's the load? An engineer or fabricator can calculate the required section modulus based on your span and loading. More load or longer span = deeper channel or heavier weight per foot.

2. What are you connecting to? Measure the space available. If you're fitting channel into an existing structure or bolting it to another member, the flange width and depth need to fit physically.

3. What's the environment? Indoor structural work? A36 hot rolled is fine. Outdoor and exposed? Consider A588 weathering steel or stainless. Lightweight or corrosive environment? Aluminum channel might be the move.

Channel vs. Angle — Channel is stronger in bending due to its deeper section. Angle is simpler and cheaper for light bracing, gussets, and connections. If you need structural strength, go with channel. If you need a corner brace or connector, angle is usually sufficient.

Channel vs. I-Beam — I-beams handle heavier loads over longer spans. Channel is better for secondary framing, lighter loads, and applications where you need a flat mounting surface. Channel is also easier to cut and weld in the field.

Channel vs. Tube — Tube (square or rectangular) resists twisting better than channel and looks cleaner for exposed work. Channel is easier to bolt to flat surfaces and is typically less expensive per foot.
