What Is Steel Plate?

Steel plate is flat-rolled steel that's generally 3/16" thick or greater. Anything thinner is usually classified as sheet metal. Plate comes in a range of standard widths (typically 48", 60", 72", and 96") and lengths (96", 120", 240", and custom cuts), and can be processed to nearly any shape with the right equipment.

Light Plate: 3/16" to 1/4"

  • Weight: 7.66 – 10.21 lb/sq ft
  • Uses: Trailer beds and decking, light fabrication brackets, gusset plates, machine guards, cover plates, and general shop projects
  • Good to know: This is the most commonly ordered range for general fabrication work. Easy to cut, form, and weld with standard shop equipment.

Medium Plate: 3/8" to 1/2"

  • Weight: 15.32 – 20.42 lb/sq ft
  • Uses: Structural base plates, equipment mounting pads, tank fabrication, agricultural implements, truck frames, and structural connections
  • Good to know: 3/8" and 1/2" plate is the sweet spot for many structural and equipment applications. It provides solid load-bearing capacity without getting excessively heavy or expensive.

Heavy Plate: 3/4" to 1"

  • Weight: 30.63 – 40.84 lb/sq ft
  • Uses: Heavy structural base plates, bridge components, crane supports, press beds, wear plates for mining and material handling, and heavy equipment fabrication
  • Good to know: At these thicknesses, you'll want to plan your cutting method carefully. Flame cutting and plasma cutting are the most practical options for plate 3/4" and above.

Extra-Heavy Plate: Over 1"

  • Weight: 40.84+ lb/sq ft
  • Uses: Pressure vessels, shipbuilding, heavy machinery foundations, ballast, large structural supports, and specialized industrial applications

Choosing the Right Grade

Most steel plate you'll encounter at a service center is A36 — and for good reason. A36 is a low-carbon structural steel with a minimum yield strength of 36,000 psi. It's weldable, machinable, formable, and affordable. For the majority of construction and fabrication projects, A36 is the right call.

When you might need something different:

  • A572 Grade 50: Higher strength (50,000 psi yield) for structural applications where you need to reduce plate thickness or weight while maintaining load capacity. Common in bridges, buildings, and heavy construction.
  • AR400/AR500: Abrasion-resistant plate for wear applications like dump truck beds, chutes, hoppers, and mining equipment.
  • Stainless steel plate (304/316): For corrosion resistance in food processing, chemical handling, marine environments, or architectural features.

How Steel Plate Is Processed

Raw plate is just the starting point. Most projects require some combination of cutting, forming, and finishing. Here are the main processing methods and when each one makes sense:

Laser Cutting — Best for thin to medium plate (up to about 1") where you need tight tolerances, complex shapes, or clean edges. Shearing — Fast, efficient cutting for straight-line cuts on thinner plate and sheet. Shearing is the most economical method when you need simple rectangular or square pieces without curves or holes.

Tips for Ordering Steel Plate

  1. Know your thickness and grade. "I need some plate" doesn't give your supplier much to work with. "1/2 inch A36 plate" does.
