Be specific about the product shape: plate, channel, angle, beam, tube or pipe, bar, or sheet? Include the dimensions — thickness, width, length, or diameter depending on the shape. For structural shapes, include the designation (e.g., W8×31, C6×8.2, L3×3×1/4).
3. Quantity
How many pieces? What total length or weight? If you're ordering multiple items, list each one separately with its own quantity. This prevents confusion and ensures nothing gets missed.
4. Processing requirements
Do you need the material cut to specific lengths? Need holes drilled, edges formed, or shapes cut from plate? Specify any processing services you need:
- Saw cutting to length (include exact dimensions and tolerances)
- Shearing for sheet and plate
- Laser cutting for precision shapes and profiles
- Plasma cutting for thicker plate
- Flame cutting for heavy plate up to 5"
- Forming or bending
- Rolling

Order cut-to-length instead of raw stock. Yes, processing adds a line item — but it eliminates waste, reduces on-site labor, and gets material installed faster. When you're paying a crew to stand around cutting steel with a portable band saw, the "savings" from buying uncut stock evaporate fast.
Consolidate with one supplier. When your steel supplier also handles cutting, forming, and processing, you eliminate a middleman, save on freight, and get one invoice instead of three. That's fewer POs to track and fewer deliveries to coordinate.
Use standard sizes when possible. Custom sizes cost more and take longer. If your design allows it, work with standard mill lengths and common dimensions. Your supplier can tell you what's in stock versus what needs to be ordered.
